- Agentic commerce means that AI agents search for, compare and buy products on behalf of users. Several new protocols exist for this, among them ACP from OpenAI and Stripe, and UCP and AP2 from Google.
- So far the checkout features run mainly in the USA, at Google also in Canada and Australia, and only for selected merchants (as of October 15, 2026). OpenAI scaled back its Instant Checkout in March 2026 and now focuses on product search.
- You can still prepare now. Agents need reachable pages, visible and current product data and clean feeds, and your SEO benefits from all of that too.
What is agentic commerce?
In classic e-commerce a person searches, clicks through categories and pays. In agentic commerce an AI agent takes over parts of this. The user says something like “Find me a weatherproof teak garden chair under 200 euros, delivered by Friday”. The agent searches offers, compares prices and delivery times, suggests a selection and, at best, completes the purchase.
The stages have progressed to different degrees. Product recommendations in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode are already widespread. Buying directly in the answer, on the other hand, is still limited to a few markets and merchants. For an agent to buy, merchant, AI platform and payment provider have to speak the same language, and that is exactly what the protocols are being built for.
Protocols and providers
The table shows the most important protocols and their status according to the provider. The field is moving fast. Check the details against the linked sources before you make decisions.
| Protocol | From | Purpose | Status 15 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | OpenAI and Stripe, open source (Apache 2.0) | Checkout, delegated payment, since April 2026 also cart, feeds and orders | Beta. First version 29 Sep 2025, current stable version 17 Apr 2026. In ChatGPT used mainly for product search since March 2026. |
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Google, developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart | Checkout directly in AI Mode and Gemini, the merchant remains the seller | Introduced in January 2026. Checkout for selected merchants, products approved for the USA, Canada and Australia. |
| Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) | Google, standardization at the FIDO Alliance | Proof that the user commissioned and approved a purchase (mandates) | Introduced on 16 Sep 2025, currently version 0.2. Extension for A2A and MCP. |
| Model Context Protocol (MCP) | Anthropic, with the Linux Foundation since December 2025 | General connection of tools and data to AI assistants | Widely used. ACP and UCP offer MCP connections. |
| WebMCP | Google and Microsoft, W3C Community Group | A website's tools for agents in the browser, such as search or cart | Draft, in Chrome as an origin trial from version 149, also in Edge as an origin trial. |
What happened at OpenAI?
OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on 29 September 2025 for users in the USA, initially with merchants from Etsy. In March 2026 OpenAI wrote that the first version had not been flexible enough. Since then merchants can use their own checkout, and OpenAI concentrates on product search in ChatGPT. Anyone who wants a deeper integration builds their own app in ChatGPT.
Shops on Shopify
Shopify distributes products to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google via Shopify Catalog. According to Shopify, eligible shops are activated by default. For ChatGPT the shop has to sell to customers in the USA. The purchase itself still runs through the shop. A product being eligible does not mean an AI channel will actually show it.
What do agents need on your website?
Whether an agent recommends your product is decided long before the checkout. It has to be allowed to fetch the page, find the right data and be able to trust it.
- The robots.txt allows the AI providers' search bots, at OpenAI for example OAI-SearchBot.
- Bot protection does not turn these bots away. Browser agents also arrive with a normal browser and often look like humans to bot protection.
- Price, availability and delivery time are visible in the delivered HTML.
- Product feed, page and structured data (schema.org Product and Offer) state the same price and the same availability.
- The feed is up to date, at Google via Merchant Center.
If you want to test early, describe search and cart with WebMCP. The standard is a draft and runs in Chrome and Edge as an origin trial.
In our own test from 30 October 2025, no AI system found a price that was only in the JSON-LD when it fetched a page directly. ChatGPT and Gemini found the visible prices. For agents, what is on the page counts first.
Risks for shops
- Wrong details in answers. If feed, page and markup differ, an agent may state an outdated price or a sold-out item.
- Locked-out agents. Strict bot rules in the firewall or CDN also block bots you actually want. Check the log files before you tighten rules.
- Unclear approvals. An agent may only buy what the user has approved. That is exactly what AP2 handles with mandates. So do not let agents submit orders without confirmation.
- Dependence on the channel. Platform rules, fees and markets change quickly, as the Instant Checkout example shows.
Preparing in six steps
- Check the robots.txt for rules for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Google-Extended. Keep training and search separate.
- Analyze in the log files which AI bots fetch your product pages and which status they get.
- Open important product pages without JavaScript. Price, availability and delivery time must stay visible.
- Compare feed, page and structured data and fix differences in price and availability.
- If you want to test early, describe product search and cart with WebMCP and measure how often agents call them.
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode about your products regularly and record whether you are mentioned.
Common mistakes
- The shop blocks all OpenAI bots to rule out training and thereby also disappears from ChatGPT search. For training, a separate group for GPTBot is enough.
- Prices and availability only appear after JavaScript has loaded.
- Merchant Center runs with different prices from the website.
- The structured data in the code says something different from the visible page.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI agents already buy today?
Yes, but on a small scale. Google offers checkout in AI Mode and Gemini for selected merchants in the USA, Canada and Australia. OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026. Merchants use their own checkout there (as of October 15, 2026).
Is agentic commerce already available in Germany?
The checkout features we found in the providers' documentation do not apply to Germany. Product recommendations in AI answers do exist here too, and they need the same technical foundation.
Do I need my own protocol?
Usually not directly. Shop systems and payment providers such as Shopify or Stripe connect to ACP or UCP. Your job is clean feeds, reachable pages and clear product data.
What is the difference between ACP and UCP?
ACP comes from OpenAI and Stripe and is used in ChatGPT. UCP comes from Google and connects merchants with AI Mode and Gemini. Both define how an agent triggers a purchase with the merchant, and the merchant remains the seller.
What does agentic commerce have to do with SEO?
A lot. Agents find products via search indexes, feeds and by fetching your pages. Reachability, rendering and consistent product data are classic technical SEO.
