Redirect Checker Check every redirect, right to the final target

Enter a list of URLs. You see every step of the chain with its status code and where it ends.

User agent (up to 3)
Websites that verify Googlebot by IP recognize an imitated user agent and often respond differently.
We store the request with your IP address to run the tool. More in the privacy policy.
Typical errors

Four patterns the checker flags

Every extra hop costs time when loading and crawling. The checker highlights these cases.

1Chains

A redirects to B, B to C. It's better if A redirects straight to C.

2Temporary instead of permanent

302 or 307 for a permanent move. For moves, 301 or 308 is the right choice.

3Broken target

The chain ends in a 404 or 5xx. The old URL's signal is lost.

4Loops and protocol switches

The chain never arrives or jumps from https back to http.

During a relaunch

Hundreds of redirects in one check

In a relaunch, a sample is rarely enough. In searchVIU's redirect mapping, you match old and new URLs with the help of suggestions. Before the redirects go live, you check them against the DEV site.

  • Mapping with suggestionsOld URL to new URL, even for large numbers of pages.
  • Check against the DEV siteBefore the rules go live.
  • ExportAs rules for Apache or nginx.

Frequently asked questions

How many hops are too many?
According to its own documentation, Google follows up to ten redirects. Each hop still costs time, so redirect to the target in a single step wherever you can.
What is the difference between 301, 302, 307 and 308?
301 and 308 stand for a permanent move, 302 and 307 for a temporary one. 307 and 308 also keep the request method. Details in the guide to 301 and 302.
Does the checker detect JavaScript or meta refresh redirects?
No. The checker follows HTTP redirects. Redirects that only happen in the browser are shown by the JavaScript Rendering Check.
How do I test redirects before a relaunch?
You'll find instructions with a checklist in the guide to testing redirects.
What do you store from my request?
We store the URLs you entered, the result and your IP address to run the tool. Fetched page content is deleted automatically after seven days. We also use the checked domain to see which companies are interested in the topic.
