Finding

Find first, then check

If you only enter the domain, the checker looks in the robots.txt and under the usual paths. It works through the sitemaps it finds one by one, up to five per run. For each sitemap, it checks the first 2,000 URLs in detail.

  • robots.txtAll entries with “Sitemap:”.
  • Usual paths/sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml and others.
  • Sitemap indexUp to 20 child sitemaps are counted. The total is shown in the result.
  • gzipThe checker reads compressed sitemaps directly.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sitemap have to be submitted in Search Console?
No. Google also finds it through the entry in the robots.txt. In Search Console, you also see how many URLs Google has read from the sitemap.
Why does the checker look at lastmod?
Google uses lastmod if the value is reliable and only changes when the content really changes. If it's missing, Google loses that signal.
Does the checker test every URL in the sitemap?
It counts all entries and looks more closely at the first 2,000. Whether every URL is reachable is checked by the HTTP Status Code Checker or the searchVIU full crawl.
What about priority and changefreq?
Google ignores both. That's why the checker doesn't evaluate them.
How big can a sitemap index be?
An index can contain up to 50,000 sitemaps. Each of them has the same limit of 50,000 URLs and 50 MB.
What do you store from my request?
We store the addresses you entered, the result and your IP address to run the tool. We don't store page content. We also use the checked domain to see which companies are interested in the topic.
