What rank tracking tools do today

A rank tracker measures the position of your website for fixed keywords, for one market and one device. The position alone says less than it used to, because AI Overviews, AI Mode and answers in ChatGPT change the search results. That is why all the tools on this page also measure AI visibility in some form.

The biggest differences lie in the interval, the billing and what comes with the rankings. Some tools measure every day, others weekly. Some count keywords, others units or SERP updates.

Specialist, suite or monitoring?

Rankings show you what changed in search. Why it changed often lies elsewhere. The right kind of tool depends on how important rankings are compared with your other tasks.

When a specialist is the better fit

  • You measure daily and need to refresh positions on demand.
  • You need cities, zip codes or search engines other than Google.
  • You process rankings further via API in your own dashboards.
  • You look after many domains as an agency and need white-label reports.

When a suite is enough

If you already use the suite for keyword research, backlinks or competitor data, its rank tracker is often enough. Check the keyword allowance first, and whether the interval is daily or weekly.

When rankings belong in monitoring

searchVIU keeps keywords per market in a Keyword Map, with target URL and ranking URL. That shows when the wrong page ranks or the target URL is not indexable. Crawl alerts and Page Watch report when ranking keywords disappear from the title. This helps when the website is your biggest risk. If you mainly have to report positions, a specialist gets you further.

What to look for in a rank tracking tool

  • How many keywords are included at the interval you really need?
  • Can positions be refreshed on demand?
  • Is the country enough, or do you need cities and zip codes?
  • Which SERP features and AI answers does the tool measure, and what does that cost extra?
  • Can you get at the data via API, export or Looker Studio?
  • How long is the history kept?

  • Full crawl every week, more often if you want. Every URL is rendered in Chrome at no extra cost.
  • Page Watch checks the most important pages continuously, spread across the day, from 1,000 pages depending on the project. If Page Watch detects a change, the alert usually arrives within a few minutes. searchVIU checks the robots.txt every 15 minutes and sitemaps daily.
  • Alerts are weighted by the share of affected URLs and Search Console clicks. They arrive by email, Slack, Teams or webhook.

Limits

  • searchVIU sees all other pages in the full crawl, once a week.
  • No CI/CD integration that can stop a build.
  • No SSO, interface in English.

Daily tracking as the default

searchVIU measures weekly. Daily is possible but not the default. If you have to report positions every day, use a specialist.

Local tracking

searchVIU measures per market, made up of country and language. For cities and zip codes, Nightwatch, SISTRIX or Advanced Web Ranking are a better fit.

Other search engines

searchVIU measures Google. Other tools cover Bing, YouTube, Amazon or Baidu.

Rank tracking alone

The add-on is only available together with SEO Monitoring from €399 per month. If you only want to measure rankings, a specialist costs much less.

Keyword database and Visibility Index

searchVIU researches keywords through AI workflows with data from DataForSEO. There is no keyword database of its own and no Visibility Index.

Backlinks and content

searchVIU has no backlink data and no content editor. A suite like Ahrefs or Semrush stays useful for that.

Which rank tracking tool is the best?
That depends on your needs. For large keyword volumes with an API, AccuRanker fits. For many search engines and markets, Advanced Web Ranking. For a small budget, Nightwatch or SE Ranking. If you already use a suite, its rank tracker is often enough.
How much does a rank tracking tool cost?
In this comparison, entry prices range from €27 per month at Ahrefs Starter with 50 keywords to €224 at AccuRanker with 2,000 keywords. Never compare the price alone. Check how many keywords are included and at what interval. At Advanced Web Ranking, daily costs seven times weekly, and SISTRIX counts SERP updates.
Do these tools also measure AI answers?
All the tools on this page measure AI visibility in some form, often as an extra. Engines, markets and billing differ. According to its help page, AWR offers ChatGPT tracking in six markets, SISTRIX runs its AI features as a beta, and Ahrefs charges extra for Brand Radar.
Does searchVIU measure rankings daily?
The default is weekly, and daily is possible. Rank Tracking is an add-on from €99 per month with 500 keywords per market and only runs together with SEO Monitoring.
Isn't Search Console data enough?
For your own website, it is a good start. But Search Console shows average positions and no competitors. Rank trackers measure fixed keywords in fixed markets, which makes the results comparable.
